3. JAMES2 GERRITY, SR. (GERRITY1) was born 1820 in Westport, Ireland, and died 1863 in WI. He married MARY GORMAN.

1860 Crawford County Wisconsin census indicated : James Gerty 40 a farmer from Ireland; Mary 36 from Ireland; Mary 11 born PA; Michael 10 born PA ; Anthony 9 born PA; James 6 born PA; Anna 4 born PA and Bridget 3 born WI.

James Gerrity probably settled in Carbondale, PA; his daughter Mary Ann was probably born there. Mary got married after her father died at age 15. Somehow she met Daniel Webster Adney from Wisconsin. There is a good possibility the Gerrity moved East from Wisconsin and settled in Hawley and Carbondale.

James Gerrity died trying to stop a fight between two neighbors. One of them had an axe and James received a blow to the head. (Need to check the 1850 census of Carbondale, Luzerne Co. PA see census roll 793 Luzerne Co) Mary stayed in Wisconsin and married Daniel Webster Adney and raised a large family.

According to Anthony Gerrity and Annie Walton's marriage certificate when they married 24 November 1873 Anthony's father James Gerrity was deceased.

James Gerrity was born in Ireland according to death certificate 55194 Nr 920 date May 22 1926.

Wisconsin Crawford County 1860 census indicates Mary 36 wife of James.

After James death and according to Mary Ruane Boyle Mary lost a child as a result of an accident involving a tree. Mary returned to Scranton were she married a Hamill.

1900 Lackawanna census indicates Mary Gorman Gerrity Hammil living in Michael Ruane's home at 522 4th Street Scranton; was mother in law; born in 1825; was 75 ; was widowed; married twice; had 8 children with 5 living; Mary and both her parents were born in Ireland; Mary immigrated to US in 1845 and was in this country 55 years; she could not read or write but could speak English.

1910 Lackawanna census indicates Mary Hammell was 90; married twice; last marriage was for 30 years; had 8 children with 8 living; still living at 522 4th St. and immigrated to this country in 1835.

According to death certificate 55194 Nr 920 Mary Gorman mother of Anthony Gerrity was born in Ireland.

According to Family Tree complication by Laurie Albrecht- Lawernce Nerby's memories of his great grandmother Mary Ann Gerrity Adney: He recalls a poem she wrote in his autograph book

When you get old and can not see,
put on your glasses and think of me.

He remembers she was a tiny woman. He was going to take his mother and father from Milwaukee to Richland Center for her funeral, in his 1930 roadster. He kissed his girlfriend Jane good bye and left with his parents. It was snowing and the storm was getting heavier. His father had two bottles of beer with him and put them on the running board when they got out of the car to check the snow depth. They were only as far as Pewaukee when they turned around. The beers were still on the running board with just the cap showing when they got home. They never made it to her funeral. Buried at St. Philips in Crawford County, Wisconsin

Notes for DANIEL W. ADNEY:

Daniel Webster Adney was a farmer and until 1902 Postmaster at Knapp Creek Wisconsin which was later renamed Adney, WI. He kept the first post office in the community, and had the first telephone. Daniel frequently got up in the middle of the night to deliver important messages on horseback to families living within 10 miles. When telephones became more common they had the first telephone exchange in the community. Their farm near Soldiers Grove became the place of the annual family reunion as their fifteen children began leaving the home. Out of the fifteen children, ten lived into adulthood.

He moved to Carbondale, Pa. which was near Hawley were he met Anna Walton his future wife.

Anthony Gerrity was the first railroad engineer to take a train over the Nicholson Viaduct.

Anthony's father came from County Cork. The Gerrity family house was 321 5th Avenue Scranton, PA.

According to death certificate 55194 Reg 920 Dept of Health PA Anthony Gerrity was 69 when he died. He was a conductor with the DL&W RR born in Carbondale, PA and lived at 321 5th Ave and was buried in Cathedral cemetery.

Wayne County 1860 census indicates Anna was 2 when the census was taken. Parents were Robert Walton born in Ireland and Ann Fee born in Canada.

According to marriage certificate Anna's name appears as Annie Walton daughter of Robert Walton. Marriage on 24th November 1873 was witnessed by Michael Jordan and Catherine Brennan.

According to death certificate 1021 Anna Gerrity died June 30, 1943 and was buried in Cathedral Cemetery July 5, 1943. Death certificate indicates Anna was born in 1855.

Anna was living at 321 Fifth Avenue at the time of her death. She is buried in Cathedral Cemetery.

December 2, 1919- Bellevue honors veteran Captain. Michael J. Ruane tendered rousing Farell party at Hose 3. Captain Michael J. Ruane, beloved resident of Bellevue, and who through 33 years service had become known as the "Daddy" of the Scranton Fire Department. A chair was presented to the Captain by members of Hose 3. Lt. Flannery made the presentation. A pen sketch of Captain Ruane by P. W. Costelol was also presented.

June 29, 1922-Bellevue holds celebration because of new fire apparatus. Captain Ruane, who was appointed to the Dept by Mayor James Bailey, served for 25 years in the Paid Dept and for years in the Volunteer Service. He was first located in Bellevue with one man with him and through efficiency rose in the various grades to that of Captain. When Captain retired he had the satisfaction of commanding one of the best company in the city.

December 8 1923-Michael J. Ruane dies, was hit by speeding car. Autoist who ran down former Fire Dept Captain continued on his way. Michael J. Ruane age about 60, died at the family home 522 Fourth Avenue at 1:30 this afternoon. Mr. Ruane was found unconscious about a week ago on Luzerne St near the DL&W Bridge. He had been hit by an Autoist who failed to stop. He was removed to his home, but his life was despaired of because of the serious injuries and his age. He was wll known throughout the city. He is survived by his wife and three sons Michael Jr. , James and Thomas and one daughter Mrs. Michael Cummings , all of the city.

December 11, 1923--Superintendent P.J. Rosar and F. B. Lewis and 100 members of the Scranton Fire Dept and scores of friends and admirers paid tribute to Capt. Michael Ruane whose funeral took place from the family home 522 Fourth Avenue. A High Mass was celebrated in Holy Cross Church at 9;30. As the body was being taken into the Church Miss Margaret Gerrity sang "Jesus, I Come". Casket bearers , Capt. James Shea, A. F. Flannery, PJ Stowe, E.J. Hines, T.J. Hughes and Lt. H. A. Flaherty.

Death certificate indicates Michael J. Ruane was living at 522 4 Th Street at the time of his death; he was 63; a watchman at the Woodlawn Dairy; was killed as a result of being hit by an automobile. his parents were John Ruane and Ann (can not make out the surname on the death certificate); both parents born in Ireland; informant was Mrs. M.J. Ruane and he was to be buried in Cathedral Cemetery.

Mary Ellen came from a large family. She lived on a farm with her parent Daniel Webster Adney and Mary Ann Gerrity Adney near Soldiers Grove in Crawford County, Wisconsin. On this farm were held annual family reunions after their children started leaving home, which Laurie Albrecht attended when she was little. Laurie remembers the large gatherings with the Mc Kinney's and their many children.

John Henry Mc Kinney of Blue River, Wisconsin celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the house of one of their daughters Mrs. Harley Covey (Alma Bertha Mc Kinney). They had nine children, 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mary Ellen Adney Mc Kinney parents Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Webster Adney had 10 living children. John H. Mc Kinney parents Mr. and Mrs. John Silas Mc Kinney had 10 children. Both sets of parents were Wisconsin pioneers and prominent in their communities. John Henry's parents lived in the town of Richwood and were farmers. According to the 1900 census he owned his own farm, it was still mortgaged and he had 59 animals.

Laurie Albrecht notes: Pearl lived at 2408 N. 28th St until she died. She raised her family there after her husbands death. She lived there with a friend George Abagail. He was a friend of both Pearl and George and rented a room from them after his wife and children left him. After George's death George A stayed on and rented until his death many years later.

When Pearl lived in Blue River she stayed alone weeks at a time because her husband George a mason had to go to jobs in Milwaukee. He was a mason with Beck and Befeifer. She would stay in her 8 room house alone with the children and she was afraid. She usually fell asleep at dawn and only had a radio. During the winters there was no work for George. She didn't want to move and leave her family (Mc Kinney) but finally decided to make the move to Milwaukee.

Pearl and George lived in Blue River when Lawerence was born. George met Pearl when she went to a ball game with her sister Mabel and Mabel's boyfriend Carl. At the ball game a storm came up and George went in Carl's car with Pearl and Mabel and left his girlfriend there. George and Pearl went together three years before they got married. They loved to dance. They rented a farm and moved in December after their marriage. It was located 2 miles out of Excelsior and they lived there one year. They went back to Richland Center and George became a carpenter before moving to Milwaukee looking for work.

The Gerrity house on 321 5th Avenue Scranton, PA was built by Anthony Gerrity, Sr. There were two houses side by side. The second house burnt down. Only 321 is still standing it is over 100 years old. Carl's grandparents lived in 321 and his father and mother lived in 323. Carl now lives in 321 5th Avenue.

Carl Anthony Marcks attended Scranton Central High School and St. Thomas College (now Scranton University) majoring in pre-Med. When World War II began enlisted in US Army Air Force. Stateside tours were in Mississippi, California and Colorado. Was shipped overseas and spent 39 months in the UK(Scotland and England). Primary duties included calibration of bomb sights.

After the war returned to Scranton and worked for bookbinding and book manufacturing companies in Scranton and Binghamton NY. Retired in 1983 and since 1987 has been confined to wheelchair as a result of muscular dystrophy
